Up to now, the students have accomplished half of the journey. See the official university video which shows the old little car with a futuristic edge.
The students intend to cross with the car, nicknamed “E-Beetle”, more than 6.400 Km, to break the record among electric cars. The little car uses a triphase electric motor fed by a Ferric Phosphate Lithium Battery. It can reach an autonomy of 297 Km at about 100Km/h (the maximum speed is 136 km/h) and go 550Km when maintaining a constant speed of 50 Km/h.

Note that this is a project is being done by students with access to innovative technology. It’s very different from the 1969 VW fed by normal batteries that delivers bread in the US in the state of Florida.
